Our Story
Hola,
My name is Gaby. I was born and raised on the south side of Chicago in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. My mother and father are both from Zacatecas, MX. I was raised in a traditional old-school Mexican household with my three siblings. I have always loved and embraced my Latina culture. I had the idea of creating a business in the winter of 2020. I didn't want to rush into selling just anything. The first thing I worked on was the name of the company. Creating a unique name was exhausting because I wanted something that was true to me. One name in particular stood out to me; a nickname given to me by my parents as a child because of my large doe eyes. Ojona, it was meant to be. However, I didn't know what I wanted to sell. I just had a name. I would mention it to my husband on and off that I wanted to make candles and branch out from there to sell different things, but nothing was set in stone. It took me about two years and a trip to Mexico to really trigger my inspiration. I saw a lot of creativity in the mercados, and what stood out to me were the artesian stands with their unique pottery. Every piece is handcrafted and hand-painted, making each one unique. I had the idea of making candles in those unique vessels I wanted to try to incorporate Mexican-inspired designs with familiar scents that many of us grew up with to embrace our heritage and be able to connect to our culture as Mexican-Americans.
